Var han vild och brutal? Den klassiska bilden av vikingen skapades på 1800-talet – under en av Sveriges mest dramatiska tider. Kungar och regeringar avlöste varandra, traditioner och maktstrukturer började svikta. Krisen var nära, vilket i grunden påverkade tidens värderingar liksom synen på manlighet. Under denna dramatiska period tog bilden av den välkände vikingen form. Historien iscensattes med samtidens behov som syfte, och genom mode, konst, museer, arkitektur och teater skapades en bild som spreds över världen.

Anna Lihammer är doktor i historisk arkeologi och har tidigare gett ut böckerna Arkeologiska upptäckter i Sverige och Vikingatidens härskare. Ted Hesselbom är konstnär med stor erfarenhet av historia och design, bland annat som chef för Röhsska designmuseum och Sigtuna museum. Tillsammans har Lihammer och Hesselbom skrivit boken om hur en av historiens starkaste bilder – vikingen – skapades.

I Vikingen: En historia om 1800-talets manlighet får läsaren veta hur det kunde komma sig att vikingatidens människor – tusen år senare – blev representerade av en bild som i många avseenden är deras motsats. Boken berättar om dem som en gång uppfann bilden av vikingen, varför de gjorde det, hur det gjordes samt hur detta påverkat och påverkar bilden av historien än idag.

Was he wild and brutal? The classic image of the Viking was created in the early 19th century – during one of the most dramatic periods in the history of Sweden. Kings and governments were overturned, traditions and power structures percieved as falling apart. The crisis affected the values of the time as well as the ideals of masculinity. During this dramatic period, the image of the well-known Viking was shaped as a remedy. History was staged with the needs of the times as its purpose, and through fashion, art, museums, architecture and theater, an image was created that began to spread around the world.

Anna Lihammer has a PhD in historical archeology and has previously published the books Arkeologiska upptäckter i Sverige (Archaeological Discoveries in Sweden) and Vikingatidens härskare (The Rulers of the Viking Age). Ted Hesselbom is an artist with extensive experience of history and design, including as director of Röhsska design museum and Sigtuna museum. Together, Lihammer and Hesselbom has written the book about how one of history’s strongest images – the Viking – was created.

In the book Vikingen. En historia om 1800-talets manlighet (The Viking: A Story of 19th-Century Masculinity) the reader learns how it could be that the people of the Viking Age a thousand years later were to become represented by an image that in many respects were their opposite. The book tells about those who once invented the image of the Viking, why they did it, how it was done and how this has affected and still affects the image of history today.
